The history of the area of Chula Vista is traceable millions of years back through prehistoric land and sea fossils. Around 3000 B.C., Yuman-speaking people inhabited the area. Native American Indians of the region are descendants of the Kumeyaay tribe who dwelled here.
In 1795, Chula Vista became a part of a Spanish land grant known as "The King's Ranch." When Mexico formed its own government in 1831 this became known as Rancho del la Nation or National Ranch.
The ranch included the area now known Chula Vista among others and was used as grazing land for cattle and horses. United States claimed California following the Mexican-American war in 1847.
When California became a state in 1850, land grants continued as private property. But later land was sold to successive developers to grow as quintessential American-style farmland settlements. New settlers were required to build homes within six months of purchase. The City of Chula Vista was thus created. The name Chula Vista for the town was suggested by a resident named James D. Schulyer. |
